Arthur Upelniek was born in Riga, the capital city of
Latvia, 1911, the son of a peasant. He studied art at the Riga Academy against the will of his
father.
The critics say he was a "fanatic" on color. With passion and
thoroughness he created his work from beginning to end. A naturalist, generally
speaking, his work can hardly be categorized into any "ism". His
later paintings, predominantly fishing scenes and seascapes, have great dramatic
power and are gaining in prestige with art critics and the public.
